“They rounded the next bend in the road, revealing the expansive bridge of Hospital de Orbigo with the river raging below. There was still hope. A wave of relief crossed Isabella’s face, just as the sound of horses thundered on the road behind."

Hospital de Orbigo is a small town in the province of León, situated on the banks of the Orbigo River. It is also known for its historic bridge, the Puente de Órbigo, which dates back to the 13th century. The bridge is considered one of the most important examples of medieval bridge engineering in Spain.

In medieval times, this was an important waypoint on the Camino de Santiago. The town’s bridge, which spans the Orbigo River, was a crucial crossing point for pilgrims. Today, the town is a popular stop for modern-day pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago. In addition, the town’s bridge and historic center are popular tourist attractions.

One of the most notable events in the town’s history is the Battle of Hospital de Órbigo, which took place in 1434 during the Reconquista. This was a period of conflict between Christian and Muslim forces in the Iberian Peninsula. During this battle, a group of Christian knights successfully defended the bridge against a much larger Muslim army.

In addition, a tournament known as the “Passo Honroso” or the “Honorable Pass” took place at this site in 1434. This medieval knightly tournament was held in honor of a knight named Suero de Quiñones. The knight vowed to defend the honor of his lady by challenging anyone who passed to a joust. The tournament lasted for a month and attracted knights from all over Europe. The event was a huge spectacle, with elaborate costumes, music, feasting, and other festivities. Eventually, the tournament ended with Suero de Quiñones successfully completing his vow. He defeated all challengers and proven his honor as a knight. The town remembers the event as a symbol of medieval chivalry. It remains an important part of the town’s cultural and historical heritage.
