"The two giant doors opened, revealing one of the greatest pearls in Spain: Leon. Isabella took a moment to let her eyes inhale the splendor of the city. The cobblestone streets stretched off in all directions, each holding its mystery. Amongst the stones, scallop shells marked the path of the Camino. Her eyes followed them to the majestic cathedral in the distance; it stood as a testament to the strength of both God and the city."

What is the history of Leon?

Originally, various Celtic tribes, including the Astures and the Vaccaei, inhabited the region that is now León. In the 1st century BC, the Roman Empire conquered the area and it became part of the province of Hispania.

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century AD, León became part of the Visigothic Kingdom. In the 8th century, the Moors conquered it. However, the Christian Kingdom of Asturias later reconquered it. In the 10th century, León became the capital of the Kingdom of León. This was one of the most important Christian kingdoms in medieval Spain.

In the 16th century, León experienced a period of cultural and artistic growth. Additionally, thanks to its location on the Camino de Santiago, the economy prospered as well. In the 19th century, León played a key role in the Spanish War of Independence against French occupation. Later, it became an important industrial center in the 20th century.
